Gabon’s military leadership declares presidential election set for April 12.

LIBREVILLE, Gabon — A presidential election in Gabon is scheduled for April 12, as confirmed by the country’s council of ministers. Following a coup in August 2023, the military has taken control of the West African nation.

According to a government statement issued late Wednesday after a cabinet meeting, “Under this decree, the electoral college is convened on Saturday, April 12, 2025.” This declaration follows the recent passage of a new electoral code by Gabon’s parliament, which outlines the regulations and requirements for conducting elections in the country.

The new legislation is contentious since it permits military officials to run for office in all political elections, a significant change from previous regulations. This shift could potentially allow Gen. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who orchestrated the coup that ousted former President Ali Bongo Ondimba, to seek election for his first presidential term.

Under Gabon’s constitution, which was ratified through a referendum in November, the presidential term is set at seven years and can be renewed once, establishing the framework for the upcoming election.
