LAS VEGAS — In April of last year, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and director Jon M. Chu presented a sneak peek of “Wicked” in Las Vegas, stirring cautious optimism for the film’s potential success. Fast forward more than a year, the trio revisited the stage at the annual CinemaCon convention to promote “Wicked: For Good.” Judging by the critical acclaim and box office success of the initial release, this appearance felt more like a celebration.

“This marks the third consecutive year that ‘Wicked’ has been the highlight of Universal’s CinemaCon presentation,” remarked Chu. “Fortunately, it proved to be a success.”

Scheduled to hit theaters in November, “Wicked: For Good” completes the cinematic transformation of the beloved Broadway musical inspired by “The Wizard of Oz.” Cynthia Erivo assumes the role of Elphaba Thropp, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West, while Ariana Grande portrays Galinda, the future Good Witch of the South.

Grande playfully mentioned, “We’ve remembered to pack our tissues,” referencing their previous emotionally charged press tour that often saw one or both stars in tears. “I’ll try to keep the tears at bay this time,” Erivo responded, before they showcased a brief montage of the film’s footage.

The “Wicked” team wrapped up an extensive — and suitably theatrical — presentation by Universal Pictures about its forthcoming films.

Oscar season annually offers Hollywood creators a chance to celebrate each other’s creativity. Similarly, CinemaCon serves as a platform for film studios and theaters to exchange encouragement and accolades. Universal made its case stronger with music, including anthemic and nostalgic tunes from classics such as “Psycho” and “Jurassic Park,” in addition to its new productions.

The studio went all out while promoting “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” another significant release by Universal anticipated in July, with appearances from stars Mahershala Ali and Scarlett Johansson, as well as director Gareth Edwards. The iconic theme played by an orchestra heightened the anticipation.

“I’ve dreamed of joining a ‘Jurassic’ film for as long as I can remember. Each time a new movie was announced, I would reach out eagerly, expressing my interest,” Scarlett Johansson shared.

Prior to this presentation, attendees had a chance to watch a preview of “How to Train Your Dragon,” the live-action adaptation of the cherished animated series. Starring Gerard Butler and Mason Thames, this film is slated for a June release.

The music was under the direction of Rickey Minor, an Emmy-winning composer best known for his role as the bandleader on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

The show extended beyond live music. Producer Jason Blum made a memorable entrance by donning a Freddy Fazbear costume when hinting at the upcoming release of “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” set for December.

As part of an exciting finale, 30 performers dressed as the character M3GAN, known for her hyper-intelligent yet dangerous demeanor, delivered a dance performance to “Oops!…I Did It Again.” Fans can look forward to “M3GAN 2.0,” which will arrive in theaters this June.
