Malian Musician Amadou Bagayoko Passes at 70

    Amadou Bagayoko, celebrated guitarist and singer from Mali, has passed away at the age of 70. The musician, known as part of the famous duo Amadou & Mariam, will be remembered for his contributions to music worldwide.

    Mali’s Minister of Culture, Mamou Daffé, announced the loss in a televised address on state television, stating that Bagayoko passed away in his hometown of Bamako on Friday. Details regarding the cause of his death were not disclosed.

    Despite losing his sight at 15 due to a congenital cataract, Bagayoko pursued his passion for music. While studying at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind, he met his future partner, Mariam Doumbia. Together, they formed the band known as Mali’s Blind Couple in 1980, quickly gaining recognition locally and internationally for their unique musical style.

    Amadou & Mariam captivated audiences with a blend of traditional African sounds and elements of rock, blues, and pop. Their innovative approach earned them a global fan base and led to the production of over ten award-winning albums. Their 2005 album “Dimanche à Bamako” and the 2013 release “Folila” received the prestigious Victoire de la Musique, an honor considered the French equivalent of the Grammys.

    The duo’s 2008 album “Welcome to Mali” was recognized with a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary World Music Album, further cementing their status as influential artists in the world music scene.

    Bagayoko’s final international appearance was alongside Doumbia at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, showcasing the enduring legacy of their musical collaboration. He leaves behind his wife, Mariam Doumbia, and their son Sam, who is also a musician, continuing the family’s musical tradition.
