In an exciting finish, Wilmer Flores delivered a decisive RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. This win secured a three-game series sweep for the Giants. San Francisco’s Mike Yastrzemski contributed significantly with a three-run homer, propelling the team to an impressive 8-1 start, which is their best since 2003.
Seattle rallied to tie the game at 4 in the ninth inning, thanks to Randy Arozarena’s RBI double. The Mariners were down to their last strike when Arozarena connected against Giants closer Camilo Doval, who eventually secured the win, improving to 1-0. However, Flores dashed the Mariners’ hope when he hit the first pitch from Gregory Santos (0-2) to bring Luis Matos home for the game-winning run.
Just before Flores’ game-winner, Mariners right fielder Victor Robles made a remarkable catch in foul territory, racing over the low railing to secure a fly ball by Patrick Bailey. Unfortunately, Robles sustained a left shoulder injury during the play and needed to be carted off for further examination. Mariners manager Dan Wilson confirmed Robles was undergoing shoulder tests at Oracle Park. The Giants challenged the call as a catch, but the play was upheld.
Earlier in the game, San Francisco mounted a comeback by scoring four runs in the fourth, overturning a 2-0 deficit and spearheaded by Yastrzemski’s opposite-field homer. Seattle had taken the early lead with solo home runs from Julio RodrÃguez and Cal Raleigh.
Giants starting pitcher Jordan Hicks allowed three runs over 5.1 innings, while Seattle’s Bryan Woo gave up four runs across his six innings of work. Camilo Doval narrowly avoided disaster in the ninth by escaping a bases-loaded situation, securing an essential out by forcing Mitch Garver to pop out, thus keeping the game tied.
Highlighting individual performances, Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee extended his hitting streak to seven games, having reached base safely in all eight contests he has played.
Looking ahead, the Mariners will return home to face the Houston Astros in a three-game series. Logan Gilbert (0-1, 3.00 ERA) is slated to pitch for Seattle, while Houston will start with Hayden Wesneski (0-1, 5.40 ERA). Meanwhile, the Giants will host the Cincinnati Reds for a three-game series starting Monday. Logan Webb (1-0, 3.00 ERA) will start for San Francisco, facing off against Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene (0-1, 2.25 ERA).
