BOSTON — During the opening game of a day-night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera sustained an injury that left him unable to bear weight on his left leg. The incident occurred when he was running the bases on Sunday, necessitating assistance off the field.

The Cardinals reported that Herrera was dealing with inflammation in his left knee. In an ESPN broadcast interview during the second game, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol shared that initial tests were negative, indicating that Herrera’s knee structure remained intact. Nonetheless, Marmol mentioned that Herrera would need to spend some time on the injured list as a precaution.

“Everything came back clean, which is good,” Marmol explained. “It could have been a lot worse.”

The injury took place as Herrera was moving from first to third base following a third-inning single by Nolan Arenado into the left-field corner. After Luken Baker fouled out to first, concluding the inning, Marmol and an athletic trainer assisted Herrera to the dugout and helped him down the steps to the clubhouse.

Pedro Pagés took over for Herrera at the bottom of the inning.

Earlier in the game, Herrera had executed an impressive lunging catch at home plate, securing an out on Connor Wong’s grounder to third. He managed to keep a foot on the plate as he dived to make the play.
