LA QUINTA, Calif. — Xander Schauffele, the reigning PGA and British Open champion, has officially withdrawn from The American Express tournament set for this week due to medical reasons. His exit marks the second withdrawal of a prominent player from the event, which is part of the PGA Tour’s third outing of the season.
Last week, Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the world, also opted out of the tournament. His withdrawal was anticipated following a minor surgical procedure on his right hand, which sustained an injury from glass while he was preparing a Christmas meal.
According to Schauffele’s manager, the reason for his withdrawal was strictly medical, but no further information was provided about his condition.
The American Express tournament is set to kick off on Thursday and will take place across three different courses. With Schauffele pulling out, former U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark remains the only player from the world’s top 10 participating, where he currently stands at No. 7.
