PHILADELPHIA – The celebrated Broadway musical “Hamilton” and the esteemed historian behind the book that inspired it will be awarded the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal this autumn, recognizing their contributions to promoting liberty worldwide.

The event, set to take place in October at Philadelphia’s historic Independence Mall, will see Ron Chernow and “Hamilton” receiving the medal along with a cash prize of $100,000. Organizers commended both the book and the musical for their profound ability to illuminate and disseminate the story of the U.S. Constitution and Alexander Hamilton, a key figure in its creation as well as the nation’s first treasury secretary.

Since its Broadway debut, “Hamilton” has become a cultural phenomenon. In addition to capturing the hearts of audiences, it has garnered numerous accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize, a Grammy, and an impressive 11 Tony Awards. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the mastermind behind the musical, expressed gratitude, saying receiving the medal is indeed a high honor. He emphasized that the U.S. Constitution represents more than just a historical document; it poses a call to action, urging individuals to actively participate in shaping a more perfect union.

Ron Chernow has carved out a remarkable career as a biographer, with works that delve into the lives of luminaries like former presidents George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant, and more recently, author and humorist Mark Twain. Reflecting on his work, Chernow noted that liberty must be actively defended and nurtured, describing it as a responsibility requiring courage and compromise. He acknowledged that the historical figures he studies were not flawless, yet they dared to dream of something greater, emphasizing the ongoing relevance of their legacy.

The Liberty Medal was instituted in 1988 as part of the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution’s signing in 1787. Past recipients of this prestigious accolade have included notable figures such as the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and prolific PBS documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. The award continues to honor those who have made impactful contributions in the advocacy and advancement of liberty around the globe.
