A jury in New York began deliberating the case against Sean “Diddy” Combs on Monday, facing complex charges of sex trafficking and racketeering that could lead to a life sentence for the music mogul. The process, however, encountered difficulties almost immediately. Despite this, by late afternoon, there were signs of progress as jurors sifted through seven weeks of intense and often emotional testimony regarding Combs’ alleged violent tendencies and sexual behaviors, including what were termed “freak-offs” or “hotel nights.”

Early in the deliberations, the jury foreperson raised concerns to Judge Arun Subramanian, suggesting a juror was struggling with the 61 pages of instructions provided. Defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo proposed a cautious approach, advising less intervention unless necessary, and the judge responded by emphasizing adherence to legal instructions. Later in the day, jurors sought further clarification on the instructions related to drug distribution, a key component of Combs’ racketeering charge.

In the courtroom, Combs took a moment to pray with family and friends, reflecting a moment of unity as they completed a prayer with applause. Combs also showcased his current reading material: “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale and “The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Achor, perhaps suggesting a focus on maintaining a positive outlook amidst the trial.

As deliberations proceeded, the jury was given access to a laptop filled with exhibits from the trial, including text messages, photographs, and videos pivotal to the case. Combs, aged 55, has denied the federal accusations, which include racketeering conspiracy, two charges of sex trafficking related to former partners, and allegations of arranging interstate transportation for prostitution.

In the closing arguments, prosecutors painted Combs as someone who wielded power, fear, and violence to fulfill his desires, suggesting he believed fame shielded him from legal consequences. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik emphasized his reliance on a close-knit team dedicated to protecting his image and hoarding power. Conversely, defense attorney Agnifilo framed the trial as financially motivated, pointing out that one of the accusers has also filed a civil lawsuit against Combs. Agnifilo argued Combs was not guilty of the alleged crimes, urging jurors to acquit him and return him to his family.

Throughout the trial, 34 witnesses testified, with Cassie—R&B singer born Casandra Ventura—and another woman known as “Jane” delivering notably impactful testimonies about their experiences. Cassie detailed instances of alleged forced sexual activities with paid male companions, while Jane described various “hotel nights.” Jurors viewed security footage from 2016 showing Combs in a violent altercation with Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel, along with other videos related to the sexual encounters.

In his defense, Combs chose not to testify, and his legal team did not call their own witnesses, opting instead to challenge the accusers’ credibility through exhaustive cross-examinations. While acknowledging an element of violence in Combs’ behavior, his attorneys argued the sexual activities were consensual and claimed the charges represented an unnecessary legal intrusion into his personal affairs.
