DALLAS – Frank Vogel is set to join Jason Kidd’s coaching team with the Dallas Mavericks, reuniting a duo that brought championship glory to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. This development was shared by an insider familiar with the terms on Wednesday night.
Vogel, who was the leading coach, and Kidd, an assistant under him when the Lakers clinched their 17th NBA title in the Florida “bubble,” will now swap roles. Vogel will step in as the associate head coach, following his recent role as a consultant with the Mavericks. Notably, both coaches share the same age of 52.
The insider requested anonymity since the agreement with Vogel is yet to be made official.
Kidd remained with the Lakers one more season after Vogel’s mentorship before he took over from Rick Carlisle as the Mavericks’ head coach in the 2021-22 season. Under Kidd’s guidance, Dallas advanced to the Western Conference finals that same year and reached the NBA Finals two years later.
Kidd’s journey to Vogel’s former staff in LA followed his dismissal from Milwaukee. His coaching career began in Brooklyn during the 2013-14 season, soon after retiring from a celebrated playing career as a Hall of Fame point guard.
The Lakers relieved Vogel of his duties two seasons after their title win. After a break from coaching, Vogel joined the Phoenix Suns for the 2023-24 season, from which he was later dismissed after an early playoff exit where the Suns suffered a first-round sweep.
Vogel also previously served as head coach for both Indiana and Orlando. During his tenure with the Pacers, he led them to back-to-back Eastern Conference finals in 2013 and 2014, although they were thwarted each time by LeBron James and the Miami Heat.
With Vogel’s addition to the Mavericks, fans will be eager to see how this seasoned coaching duo will steer the team in their forthcoming campaigns.
