SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — In a thrilling matchup on Saturday night, Drake University overcame Missouri State with a final score of 69-62, thanks in large part to Bennett Stirtz, who contributed 18 points and six crucial points in overtime.
Stirtz’s defensive efforts were notable as he also recorded four steals for the Bulldogs, who now stand at 18 wins and 2 losses overall, and 8 wins against 2 losses in the Missouri Valley Conference. Mitch Mascari supported the team’s efforts with 13 points and five rebounds, helping secure their sixth consecutive victory.
The Bears fought hard but ultimately fell short, with Michael Osei-Bonsu leading their efforts with an impressive 24 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks. Vincent Brady II also made a significant contribution, scoring 14 points and dishing out four assists. Dez White scored eight points, but the loss marked the Bears’ ninth consecutive defeat, deepening their struggles this season.
Drake began the game strong, finishing the first half with a solid 35-25 lead. Mascari stood out as the leading scorer for the Bulldogs during the first half, netting 10 points. However, the Bears rebounded in the second half, outscoring Drake by 10 points, leading to a nail-biting tie at the end of regulation with the score at 55. In the overtime period, Stirtz was efficient, making his only shot attempt and going a perfect four for four from the free-throw line, ultimately sealing the victory for Drake.
