Philosopher Byung-Chul Han has been honored with the 2025 Princess of Asturias Prize for Humanities in recognition of his critical examination of digital technology and modern capitalism. The prize was announced by the organizers in Spain on Wednesday.
Han, originally from South Korea, has built his career in Germany and is an acclaimed author of more than 20 books. His works, such as “The Burnout Society” and “The Scent of Time,” offer concise and insightful analyses and have been translated into numerous languages, extending their reach globally.
The jury for the award praised Han for his exploration of themes like “dehumanization, digitalization, and the isolation of individuals,” noting that his writings have resonated with readers across various age groups and backgrounds. His ability to articulate the challenges of the digital age strikes a chord with audiences worldwide.
The Princess of Asturias Award for Humanities, valued at 50,000 euros (about $57,000), is among eight prestigious annual awards. These awards span categories such as arts, literature, science, and sports, celebrating outstanding contributions in each field.
Held each autumn in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo, the awards ceremony is overseen by Princess Leonor of Spain. This event not only highlights exceptional achievements but also fosters international understanding and the spirit of humanism.
