In Sri Lanka’s hilly tea plantation region, a tragic bus accident occurred on Sunday, resulting in 21 fatalities and injuring 35 others, according to a police spokesperson. The incident took place near Kotmale, approximately 140 kilometers (86 miles) east of Colombo, the nation’s capital. This area, located in central Sri Lanka, is known for its challenging mountainous terrain.

Police spokesman Buddhika Manathunga reported the death toll and confirmed that the injured are receiving treatment in medical facilities. Local news broadcasts displayed distressing images of the bus overturned at the base of a steep slope, with rescue crews and local volunteers assisting the injured passengers.

The driver of the bus, who sustained injuries, was among those admitted to a hospital for medical care. At the time of the crash, the vehicle was carrying nearly 50 passengers. Authorities have commenced an investigation to determine if driver negligence or a mechanical issue in the bus led to the accident.

The bus involved in the accident was operated by a government-run transportation company. Such tragic incidents are unfortunately frequent in Sri Lanka, particularly in the country’s mountainous districts. These accidents are often attributed to reckless driving and the poor condition of roads, which are often narrow and inadequately maintained.
