KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that they have activated wide receiver Marquis Brown from injured reserve, allowing him to make his regular-season debut against the Texans on Saturday. This marks a significant moment for the team as Brown was their most notable free-agent signing during the offseason.
Brown’s journey back to the field was challenging, following a dislocated sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder that he sustained during the first play of the preseason against Jacksonville. Initially, it was hoped that the injury would heal naturally within a few weeks; however, as the recovery stalled, the decision was made for Brown to undergo surgery to properly address the issue.
After being cleared to return to practice late last week, Brown participated fully throughout this past week, showcasing his readiness. Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid praised Brown’s efforts, noting that while the injury did not affect his legs, allowing him to maintain his running fitness, the recovery from surgery had gone well.
Brown will reunite with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who successfully navigated the week despite dealing with a high-ankle sprain he sustained the previous week against Cleveland. Together, they will contribute to a Kansas City offense that has shifted significantly since the onset of the season.
Compounding the team’s challenges, the Chiefs lost their number one wide receiver, Rashee Rice, in Week 4 due to a season-ending knee injury. This prompted them to acquire three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins through a trade with Tennessee. Additionally, with running back Isiah Pacheco sidelined, the Chiefs brought back Kareem Hunt, who has performed well and become a valuable part of their backfield alongside Pacheco.
Hopkins commented on Brown’s experience in the league, considering him a veteran receiver, which adds a layer of advantage for the team as they navigate their demanding schedule. The timing of Brown’s return is particularly advantageous for Kansas City, as they are facing a trio of games within just 11 days. The Chiefs currently hold a strong position at 13-1 and will face the Texans on Saturday, followed by a matchup against the Steelers on Christmas Day, all while aiming to secure the top seed in the AFC playoffs.
In light of Brown’s activation, the Chiefs made roster adjustments by releasing running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire earlier in the week. They also elevated safety Deon Bush and tight end Anthony Firkser from their practice squad in preparation for the game against the Texans.
