Costa Rica appoints Miguel Herrera as head coach for 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.

Formerly at the helm of the Mexican national team, Miguel Herrera has been appointed as the new head coach of Costa Rica’s men’s national soccer team.
The 56-year-old Herrera, known for his previous achievements with Mexico, was officially announced for the position on Tuesday by the Costa Rican football federation.
His appointment comes after Gustavo Alfaro stepped down from the role earlier in August, opting to take the coaching job in Paraguay.

Costa Rica is currently competing in the third round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament, where they are one of 12 nations aiming for three direct tickets to the 2026 World Cup.
The United States, Canada, and Mexico have already secured their places as host countries for the upcoming tournament.
The next set of qualifying matches is scheduled to commence in September.

Herrera has an extensive coaching background, having led six teams in Mexico’s top division, including Club América, where he captured Apertura titles in both 2013 and 2018.
Throughout his tenure with Mexico, he led the team to a playoff victory against New Zealand in 2013, which secured their spot in the World Cup held in Brazil.
During that tournament, Mexico was unfortunately eliminated in the round of 16.
Additionally, Herrera guided the national team to a Gold Cup win in 2015, but his journey was marred by controversy, leading to his dismissal shortly thereafter due to an altercation with a journalist at a Philadelphia airport.
