KAMPALA, Uganda โ€” Ugandan military officials reported the deaths of two individuals amidst efforts to thwart a suspected bombing operation close to a Catholic site in Kampala.

According to a military statement, security forces โ€œintercepted and neutralized two armed terroristsโ€ within the suburb of Munyonyo.

The deceased included a man and a woman who were traveling on a motorcycle. A police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, explained that the woman apparently detonated an explosive device when authorities following the pair approached them. Further specifics were not disclosed, as investigations are currently ongoing.

The incident coincides with Ugandaโ€™s observance of a holiday commemorating Christian martyrs who lost their lives between 1885 and 1887 under the directive of a regional leader. This occasion traditionally draws pilgrims to a distinct location near Kampala, where esteemed figures, including President Yoweri Museveni, are in attendance for religious services.

Though explosive incidents are infrequent in the country, the authorities occasionally alert the public about threats from militant groups opposing Museveniโ€™s administration.
