In Taylor Jenkins Reid’s latest narrative venture, “Atmosphere: A Love Story,” the author reflects on a difficult phase during the novel’s creation set amidst the vibrant 1980s NASA shuttle program. Finding herself at an impasse, she turned to her most trusted confidant—her husband. Expressing her doubts, Reid voiced her concerns about her lack of detailed knowledge on critical elements such as the intricacies of shuttle operations and specific NASA protocols. Her husband’s reassurance reminded her of the considerable progress and knowledge she had already amassed over the months, urging her to continue her efforts.

Released this week, “Atmosphere” chronicles the adventures of Joan Goodwin, an astronomer who earns a spot in NASA’s astronaut training program. As the narrative unfolds, Joan’s close-knit group of fellow trainees strives to fulfill their dream of traveling to space, only to face unforeseen calamity. The storyline alternates between two key timelines: the beginning of Joan’s NASA journey and a momentous mission in December 1984 that goes awry. Filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, known for “Captain Marvel,” are currently adapting the novel into a film, with hopes for a theatrical release.

Creating “Atmosphere” required Reid to dive far deeper into her research than usual, departing from her standard six-to-eight-week period. The author, who enjoys exploring various eras and topics, has previously delved into the golden Hollywood era in “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo,” the 1970s rock scene in “Daisy Jones & the Six,” the sun-kissed 1980s surf culture in “Malibu Rising,” and the intense world of professional tennis in “Carrie Soto is Back.” However, portraying the complex world of NASA demanded extended efforts and expansive learning.

“It seems surreal looking back,” Reid commented, “It was a period of intense research and discovery.” Assistance from experts was indispensable for Reid, who sought external guidance. Paul Dye, NASA’s longest-serving flight director, played a pivotal role. His expertise provided critical insights into space shuttle operations, allowing Reid to craft authentic scenarios for her novel. “Paul spent hours helping me create chaos and fully understand the mission control relationships crucial to the book’s narrative,” she shared, attributing the book’s existence to Dye’s invaluable support.

In a recent conversation, Reid shared thoughts on her journey with “Atmosphere,” her relationship with social media, astronomy, and updates on “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” film. Her insights, abridged for conciseness, provide a fascinating glimpse into her creative and personal transformation.

When asked how writing “Atmosphere” impacted her, Reid expressed newfound enthusiasm for astronomy. A trip to the Grand Canyon, detoured for a visit to a dark sky park, underscored the wonders of an unobstructed night sky, fostering a deep appreciation for the celestial. “It’s an awe-inspiring experience everyone should seek,” she recommended.

Regarding social media, Reid admitted she departed from it last year. “Social media filled my head with doubts and ideals of perfection,” she reflected. Without it, she found clarity and reconnected with her authentic voice and perspective. This shift allowed Reid to appreciate the grandeur of the world around her and her place within it, a perspective illuminated by her interest in astronomy.

On the topic of “Carrie Soto’s” Netflix series with Serena Williams as executive producer, Reid shared her starstruck moment meeting the tennis icon. Engaging with someone of Williams’ stature reinforced the authenticity they aim to achieve in the series. “Serena brings lived experience that elevates the storytelling,” Reid remarked, highlighting Williams’ crucial role in capturing the authenticity of the competitive tennis world.

Reid also provided a cautious update on the “Evelyn Hugo” film adaptation. While details remain under wraps, Reid assured fans of the commitment to honoring the novel and satisfying its devoted readers. “There’s immense dedication and understanding of the book’s impact,” she noted, emphasizing Netflix’s respect for its audience and its focus on creating a film that stays true to the beloved story. The journey to bring “Evelyn Hugo” to the screen is one approached with care and significant effort.
