In Perth, Australia, the top-seeded duo of Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz, who was a finalist at the U.S. Open, have advanced to the quarterfinals of the United Cup mixed teams tennis event.
Fritz secured a victory over Borna Coric with a score of 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday, allowing the American team to clinch first place in Group A after needing just one win. Gauff later followed up with a convincing win against Donna Vekic, defeating her 6-4, 6-2 in the women’s singles match.
Despite losing to Vekic at the Paris Olympics, the world No. 3 showcased her talent on Tuesday, demonstrating her growth since that defeat. “I’m really pleased with my performance today,” Gauff expressed. “She is an exceptional player, and the loss at the Olympics motivated me to improve. I’m thrilled to help my team advance.”
The U.S. team previously edged out Canada in their opening match, and with the quarterfinals scheduled for Wednesday, they will face off against China, who qualified as the best runner-up.
Meanwhile, in Sydney, Italy also secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a resounding 3-0 victory over France at Ken Rosewall Arena. Flavio Cobolli achieved an impressive upset, winning 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-2 against France’s Ugo Humbert. Jasmine Paolini contributed significantly by defeating Chloe Paquet with a dominating score of 6-0, 6-2, which confirmed Italy’s win before they also triumphed in the mixed doubles match.
Italy, who were champions of the past two Davis Cups and runners-up to the U.S. in the inaugural mixed teams event two years ago, managed to top Group D without their world No. 1, Jannik Sinner, after a 2-0 victory against Switzerland in their previous tie.
