SEATTLE โ A dominant performance powered by George Springerโs three-run homer led the Toronto Blue Jays to a 9-1 triumph over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, finalizing a three-game sweep.
Addison Barger contributed his first home run of the season, adding a solo shot in the seventh inning. The Blue Jays showcased impressive offensive skills, easily scoring against Bryce Miller (2-4) and the slumping Mariners, who had previously held the majorsโ best record since April 7.
Torontoโs offensive push began in the second inning with an RBI single by Myles Straw, followed by a sacrifice fly by Ernie Clement in the fourth inning before Springer significantly widened the gap.
Seattleโs offensive performance fell short against opener Jose Urena and piggyback reliever Eric Lauer (1-0), as they combined for an effective 6 2/3 innings of one-run pitching. The Mariners had a disappointing start to their six-game homestand, managing only seven runs over the three games.
The victory brought the Blue Jaysโ record back to an even 20-20, following a successful 4-2 road trip. They have been strong recently, with a 7-4 record in their last 11 games.
A significant moment came when Springer hit a fastball pitched down the middle by Miller, sending the baseball 416 feet down the left-field line. Left fielder Randy Arozarena merely watched it sail into the crowd, signifying Torontoโs control over the game.
This sweep marked Torontoโs second of the season, with the first occurring against Washington from March 31 to April 2, when they also secured three consecutive victories.
Looking ahead, Seattle pitcher Emerson Hancock (1-1, 5.70 ERA) is scheduled to face the visiting New York Yankees on Monday night. Clarke Schmidt (0-1, 4.79) will take the mound for New York as the two teams begin their three-game series. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are set to embark on a three-game series against Tampa Bay starting Tuesday.
