MEREDITH, N.H. — The fall season in New England has drawn visitors from locations as distant as Florida and Berlin, eager to experience the breathtaking transformations of the foliage. Enthusiasts are taking scenic drives, embarking on train excursions, and joining bus tours to marvel at the vibrant reds, oranges, and bronzes that typify the autumn landscape. The picturesque towns and charming covered bridges nestled among the shifting forests create a perfect backdrop for enjoying nature’s annual spectacle.

“Leaf-peeping offers an exceptionally accessible form of tourism,” explained Teddy Willey, the general manager of the Frog Rock Tavern, located in Meredith, New Hampshire. “You don’t need to be an avid hiker, nor do you need a boat to participate.” All it takes is a willingness to hop in a car and head north, he noted.

“Once you arrive, you can simply soak it all in,” Willey remarked after his tavern was bustling with visitors from Indiana disembarking from a sightseeing bus.

Among the tourists was Vicky Boesch from Fort Wayne, who traveled with her sisters. “We ventured out to the Northeast to witness the stunning foliage and colorful leaves,” she shared, expressing particular admiration for Vermont’s landscapes. “The mountains were especially beautiful, especially with the sun shining yesterday; it really enhanced the colors,” she added.

Vicky pointed out that it wasn’t just the autumn hues that stood out compared to Indiana, but also the unique architecture, serene lakes, and charming towns of the region that caught her attention.

Gordon Cochran from Lake View, Iowa, shared his experience of visiting his daughter in New Hampshire, enjoying a “beautiful ride” on the relaxing Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad.

However, climate change has posed challenges to recent leaf-watching seasons. One significant issue is the drought linked to global warming, which can lead to leaves browning prematurely instead of showcasing their full autumn beauty.

Willey admits that he isn’t particularly enthusiastic about the foliage himself. “Honestly, no. Being raised here has diminished its appeal for me a bit,” he laughed, though he still acknowledges the season’s charm. “As I drive through the Lakes Region, I catch myself thinking, ‘This is why people flock here and why I choose to live here. It truly is quite beautiful,’” he reflected, highlighting a scenic area in eastern New Hampshire.
