THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A fascinating relic that combines art and history is now featured at the Netherlands’ national museum. The recently unveiled exhibit is an intriguing artifact: a nearly two-century-old condom decorated with erotic art, symbolic of both artistic expression and health awareness in its time.

The Rijksmuseum has shared that this rare condom, believed to be crafted around 1830 utilizing a sheep’s appendix, serves as a representation of both the lighthearted and significant aspects of sexual health. It stands as a centerpiece within a newly launched exhibit titled “Safe Sex?” that delves into the world of 19th-century sex work and opened earlier this week.

This particular condom is thought to have been a souvenir from a brothel of its era. Adorning it is an intriguing erotic illustration portraying a nun alongside three clergymen. Furthermore, it bears the inscription “This is my choice” written in French. As per the museum’s explanation, this phrase is an allusion to the famous artwork “The Judgment of Paris” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, which famously illustrates the story of the Trojan prince Paris adjudicating a beauty contest among three goddesses.

Art enthusiasts and history buffs alike can view this captivating display at the museum until the conclusion of November, providing an insightful look into the intertwining of art and intimate aspects of human history.
