The film industry and its admirers are mourning the loss of David Lynch, the iconic filmmaker renowned for his groundbreaking works such as “Twin Peaks” and “Mulholland Drive.” The announcement of his passing at the age of 78 came on Thursday, leaving behind a legacy that is both influential and unique.

Renowned director Steven Soderbergh shared his thoughts, noting, “He’s one of those filmmakers who was influential but impossible to imitate. People would try, but he had a particular formula that was his alone, and attempting to replicate it was a risky endeavor. Although his narratives often appeared non-linear and illogical, they were meticulously organized in his mind.”

Director Francis Ford Coppola expressed his deep sorrow on Instagram, stating, “I am astounded and heartbroken. I can’t put into words the profound loss of the great David Lynch, my friend.”

Actor Kyle MacLachlan, famous for his roles in “Blue Velvet” and “Twin Peaks,” reflected on Lynch’s pivotal role in his career. “Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my understanding, David Lynch chose me from obscurity to star in his first and last major studio movie. He saw something in me that I failed to recognize. I owe not just my career, but my life to his visionary talent,” he wrote on Instagram.

Naomi Watts shared her feelings of gratitude, recalling, “The world will not be the same without him. His creative mentorship was genuinely powerful. He illuminated my path in an industry I had been striving to enter for over ten years, failing many auditions. Finally, I found myself in front of him, this curious man radiating light, uttering words from another era, making me laugh and feel secure. How could he ‘see me’ when I was concealed, and I had lost sight of myself?”

Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, who contributed to the soundtrack of Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” described working with the filmmaker as “like a dream out of one of his movies,” and he encouraged everyone to explore Lynch’s extensive body of work, stating he was “a true artist through and through.”

Ron Howard also paid tribute on X, saying, “#RIPDavidLynch, a gracious man and fearless artist who followed his heart & soul and showed that radical experimentation could produce unforgettable cinema.”

Musician and producer Questlove recognized Lynch for teaching him the importance of taking breaks and embracing creative challenges outside of one’s comfort zone. He shared his thoughts via Threads, acknowledging Lynch’s influence on the creative process.

James Gunn expressed his admiration, simply saying, “RIP David Lynch. You inspired so many of us”—a sentiment echoed by many in the industry.

Lastly, director Jane Schoenbrun conveyed her gratitude for Lynch’s work, stating, “Like Kafka and Bacon, he dedicated his life to unlocking a new realm. He was the first to unveil a beautiful world of love and danger that I sensed but had never encountered beyond dreams. Thank you, David; your gift will resonate for the rest of my life.”

The American Film Institute also recognized Lynch’s profound influence, remarking, “Across the decades, David’s impact on cinema was indelible, visible in both his films and art. He consistently supported AFI, nurturing storytellers who dared to write their own narratives and reach for something different.”
