WACO, Texas — In an impressive display, Sawyer Robertson led Baylor to a 45-17 victory over Kansas, throwing for 310 yards and four touchdowns, marking the Bears’ sixth consecutive win and keeping their aspirations for a Big 12 championship game berth alive.
The Bears (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) surged ahead in the first half, scoring touchdowns on three straight possessions to establish a 21-7 advantage. They continued their offensive prowess in the third quarter, finding the end zone on each of their three drives.
Bryson Washington contributed significantly to the Bears’ offense, rushing for 192 yards on 27 attempts, including a 10-yard touchdown run and another score from the 1-yard line later in the game.
On the other hand, Kansas (5-7, 4-5), which had entered the game on a three-game winning streak against ranked opponents, was unable to penetrate Baylor’s defense successfully and find their rhythm on offense. With the win, Baylor clinched the opportunity to keep their slim hopes alive for a bowl game, contingent on certain outcomes later in the day.
To secure a spot in next week’s conference title game, the Bears needed victories from Arizona over Arizona State, Kansas State against Iowa State, and Houston defeating BYU.
In terms of individual performances, Robertson completed 23 of 31 passes, hitting Monaray Baldwin for touchdowns of 36 and 39 yards in the first quarter, and connecting with Josh Cameron for a 14-yard touchdown in the second. Baldwin finished with seven catches for 119 yards, while Cameron added eight receptions totaling 102 yards.
For Kansas, Devin Neal rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, while Jalon Daniels completed 12 of 23 passes for 280 yards, but faced significant pressure leading to two interceptions thrown to Baylor safety Devyn Bobby.
Analyzing the game further, Kansas’s struggles came from their inability to capitalize on offensive opportunities. Despite being down 21-10 at halftime and actually outgaining Baylor 301-283 in total yards, they faced critical setbacks like a missed 38-yard field goal and turnovers stemming from a Daniels interception and a fumble by Tevita Noa after a big reception.
For Baylor, this season’s turnaround has been remarkable. Starting the season 0-3 in conference play and facing questions about head coach Dave Aranda’s future, the team has rallied impressively since then, achieving a six-game winning streak since their last loss to Iowa State on October 5.
Looking ahead, the Kansas Jayhawks have concluded their season, while Baylor awaits news regarding their impending matchup in postseason play.
