MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Grizzlies’ center Zach Edey has sustained another sprain to his left ankle, and the team announced on Saturday that the rising star will require surgery to address the injury.

The Grizzlies reported that the 7-foot-3 player, who earned a spot on the All-Rookie team, aggravated his ankle during a workout session this week. Medical imaging showed notable ligament instability, necessitating a surgical procedure to repair the damage and ensure the joint is properly stabilized.

Previously recognized as a two-time national player of the year while at Purdue, Edey was sidelined for 12 games earlier this season because of an initial sprain to the same ankle. Nevertheless, he went on to participate in 66 games throughout the season, with 55 appearances as a starter. During this time, he averaged 9.2 points per game and led rookies with 8.3 rebounds per match.

The Grizzlies have indicated that they will release a preliminary timeline for Edey’s recovery following his surgery. The team is optimistic about his potential for a complete recovery and looks forward to his return.
