DALLAS – Former NFL cornerback Kelvin Joseph is facing legal troubles following an incident that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist on a freeway in the Dallas area. According to a report from The Dallas Morning News, Joseph’s involvement in the tragic event has led to serious charges.
Authorities in Richardson, a suburb of Dallas, revealed via social media that Joseph contacted police in Plano, another neighboring suburb, after being involved in the crash during the early hours of Saturday. The crash claimed the life of 27-year-old Cody Morris of Plano.
Joseph, aged 25, was behind the wheel of a BMW at the time of the accident. He was apprehended on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and a more severe charge of collision involving personal injury or death, classified as a second-degree felony. These charges highlight the severity of the incident in which Morris tragically lost his life.
Kelvin Joseph was initially drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2021 and spent two seasons with the team before being traded to the Miami Dolphins. Apart from his stints with Dallas and Miami, he had brief periods playing for Seattle and Indianapolis. Currently, Joseph is a player for the DC Defenders in the United Football League (UFL). The team was scheduled to compete in a UFL conference championship game on Sunday. In a statement to a local Dallas TV station, the UFL acknowledged being aware of Joseph’s arrest but chose not to comment further on the matter.
This is not the first time Joseph has encountered off-field issues. During the Cowboys’ 2022 offseason, he was reportedly a passenger in an SUV from which shots were fired into a group of men, resulting in a fatal incident. At the time, investigations cleared Joseph of being the shooter, and he faced no suspension from the NFL.
The status of Joseph’s legal representation remains uncertain, as an attorney who previously worked with him did not respond to inquiries from The Dallas Morning News. It is also unknown whether he has secured legal counsel following his recent arrest.
Joseph’s involvement in this unfortunate accident, coupled with the grave charges he faces, adds a significant chapter to the off-field challenges he’s encountered throughout his career.
