In a tragic incident at a coal mine in northeastern Slovenia, one miner has died and two others are missing following an unexpected influx of water. The accident occurred on Monday evening in the city of Velenje, as reported by local officials and media outlets. While the majority of miners managed to escape, three individuals were left trapped inside the mine, according to information from the STA news agency.

Marko Mavec, the director general of the Premogovnik Velenje mine, expressed concerns on Tuesday about the survival chances of the two missing miners, noting that they appear to be quite low. Rescue operations are presently facing significant challenges due to the accumulation of silt and water within the mine.

The cause of the incident remains unclear. In response to this tragedy, Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar has called for a comprehensive investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future and to ensure the safety of miners across the nation.

Coal extraction in Velenje occurs at depths exceeding 500 meters (approximately 1,600 feet) below the surface. The mine employs a specific extraction technique known as the Velenje method, which was developed in 1947. This technique involves expanding the extraction area above protected regions, thereby utilizing natural forces to break and fragment the coal seams.

The Velenje mine has a history of tragic events; a prior incident in 2003 resulted in the deaths of two miners. The ongoing rescue and recovery efforts continue to be a focal point for officials as they navigate the challenges brought about by the dangerous conditions present in the mine.
