PHOENIX — In a strong performance on Sunday, Nick Pivetta led the San Diego Padres to an 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, allowing just two hits over seven innings. This impressive win helped the Padres break free from a three-game losing streak. Adding power to the offense, Jake Cronenworth hit a home run while Fernando Tatis Jr. showcased his skills with four hits, three runs, and a stolen base.

The Padres were eager to rebound after a tough 8-7 loss on Saturday, where Arizona’s late surge secured their win in the ninth inning. Pivetta was in exceptional form, retiring the first 12 Diamondbacks he faced until Josh Naylor walked on a full count in the fifth inning. Following Naylor’s walk, Eugenio Suárez hit a 437-foot home run, marking his 21st homer of the season and giving Arizona its first hit of the game. Pivetta wrapped up his outing with nine strikeouts.

On the offensive front, Xander Bogaerts’ RBI double set the stage for the Padres’ 1-0 lead against Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly. Soon after, Cronenworth sent a homer to the right field after a challenging 10-pitch duel. Kelly, who pitched for five innings, allowed seven hits, one walk, and struck out seven before leaving the mound. The loss snapped Arizona’s five-game winning streak, concluding their homestand with a 5-1 record as they prepare for a nine-game road trip.

Anthony DeSclafani returned to major-league play for the Diamondbacks, pitching for the first time since July 2023. He completed the game by allowing two runs over 2 1/3 innings, including giving up a homer to Elias Díaz in the ninth inning.

A pivotal moment in the game was when Suárez’s homer reduced the Padres’ lead, but later, doubles by Díaz and Tatis Jr. off reliever Tayler Scott helped extend San Diego’s advantage to 5-2 by the seventh inning.

A notable statistic is the Diamondbacks’ streak of having hit home runs in ten consecutive games, the longest active streak in Major League Baseball. They have hit a total of 18 home runs since June 5, posting a 6-4 record in those games.

Looking ahead, the Padres’ Dylan Cease, with a season record of 2-5 and a 4.28 ERA, is set to start against the Dodgers on Monday. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks will head to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
