In Miami, one of South Florida’s zoological gems celebrated a significant milestone as its oldest resident marked his 135th birthday combined with a unique Father’s Day. The distinguished Goliath, a Galapagos tortoise tipping the scales at 517 pounds (234 kilograms), resides at Zoo Miami and recently experienced the joy of fatherhood for the first time earlier this month.

According to Zoo Miami representative Ron Magill, Goliath serves as an emblem of perseverance and inspiration. Magill highlighted Goliath’s journey, emphasizing that it proves determination can overcome obstacles. One egg, from a clutch laid on January 27, successfully hatched on June 4, signifying not only Goliath’s paternal debut but also the inaugural hatching of this endangered species at the zoo.

Historically, the population of these remarkable tortoises was severely impacted before the 20th century due to human activities and invasive species disrupting their habitats in the Galapagos Islands. Today, challenges such as climate change and habitat destruction continue to threaten their survival.

Goliath’s origins trace back to his hatching on Santa Cruz Island within the Galapagos archipelago between the years 1885 and 1890. This group of islands is located near the equatorial waters of the Pacific Ocean, west of Ecuador. He began his journey to the United States when he arrived at the Bronx Zoo in 1929, and eventually made his way to Zoo Miami in 1981.

Though Goliath had previously mated with several partners during his stay in Miami, this marks his first successful siring. The mother of the new hatchling, Sweet Pea, is estimated to be between 85 and 100 years old, contributing to the next generation.

The wonder of this event continues as both parents are thriving in their public exhibit. Meanwhile, the newborn is reportedly in excellent health while residing in a separate area, as wild hatchlings typically fend for themselves, independent of parental care.
