NEW YORK — Reflecting with deep sentiment, Mike Love fondly reminisces about his cousin and collaborator, Brian Wilson, who passed away this past Wednesday at the age of 82.

“His loss is profoundly felt,” Love shared on Thursday, “Though everyone’s journey comes to an end, Brian experienced a life abundant in creativity, and working alongside him was a true joy, an experience with countless blessings for us both.”

That evening, Love was set to be celebrated with an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, an honor previously received by Wilson in 2000. His introduction was to be conducted by actor and fellow musician John Stamos. In recent years, Stamos lent his talents to Beach Boys performances and was scheduled to join them for select shows as their tour resumed Friday in New York.

“I assembled a heartfelt video piece featuring Mike and Brian’s collaboration on ‘Brian’s Back,'” Stamos explained. “I’m hoping to present it with Mike’s blessings at the start of the evening. It’s bound to be an emotional undertaking, but a fitting tribute nonetheless.”

Stamos expressed his deep appreciation for Wilson and the band: “The absence of the Beach Boys would have left the world wanting. They’re vital to our musical landscape.”

Sharing his thoughts on the induction, Love remarked, “It may be overdue, but my cousin’s spirit accompanies me tonight. Our collaborative efforts are intertwined, and our bond was filled with genuine affection. It’s a great honor to be acknowledged for my contributions to the legacy of the Beach Boys.”

Love and Wilson crafted their debut hit “Surfin'” back in 1961. However, their relationship wasn’t without its challenges—Love previously took legal action over songwriting credits, asserting that he was not properly recognized on numerous tracks.

Stamos, prior to the induction ceremony, spoke highly of Love: “As a songwriter, Mike created a captivating portrayal of California that inspired many worldwide to align with his vibrant visions. His work exudes optimism and positivity.”

He continued, “While Brian was celebrated as a musical genius, Mike’s contributions, unfortunately, often went underappreciated.”

Mike Love finds immense satisfaction in witnessing the enjoyment listeners derive from the Beach Boys’ music at live shows. “Observing the audience’s enthusiasm, even six decades on, is enlightening. Our music resonates broadly, offering joy to individuals across America and beyond—a truly remarkable legacy,” he reflected.
