COLLEGE PARK, Md. — In a challenging matchup, Maryland faced significant hurdles with 25 turnovers, losing a 17-point lead, and struggling on the boards during the second half. Despite these challenges, Coach Brenda Frese found plenty of positives in her team’s performance.

“I thought it was a phenomenal game from two really competitive teams,” Frese remarked, giving credit to Michigan State for their relentless effort throughout the contest. The Terrapins, ranked No. 8, managed to edge out No. 19 Michigan State with a score of 72-66, showcasing their ability to deliver in clutch moments even when the game became messy from an offensive perspective.

In the closing minute of the game, with Maryland holding a narrow two-point lead, Shyanne Sellers connected with Christina Dalce on a crucial pick-and-roll play that resulted in an easy layup—just Dalce’s only points of the night. Following this basket, Michigan State could not capitalize on their opportunities, leading to their loss against another competitive Big Ten opponent.

Originally, this game appeared to be a potential showdown of unbeaten teams, but Michigan State’s recent loss to Alabama prevented that scenario from unfolding. Maryland, maintaining an impressive record of 12-0 and 2-0 in the Big Ten, is enjoying its best start since the 2018-19 season when they also went undefeated in their first twelve games.

Frese acknowledged the determination of her players, stating, “It’s one of the most competitive groups I’ve ever coached. It’s not really about being undefeated. Of course, we love it. I think it shows just the work that they’re putting in.” She emphasized the importance of hard work and perseverance, suggesting that this commitment is reflected in the team’s success on the court.

While the Terrapins secured a victory against Duke last month, this matchup against ranked opposition posed a different challenge and was notably physical. The game demanded grit, particularly when it came to rebounding. Michigan State’s coach, Robyn Fralick, noted their team’s tenacity, highlighting a distinct 10-1 advantage in offensive rebounds during the second half.

Despite the loss of a substantial lead, and a tie score at 57-57, Maryland regained their foothold with timely three-pointers from Saylor Poffenbarger and Bri McDaniel, establishing a six-point lead. Although McDaniel took a hard fall earlier in the fourth quarter, she managed to return to the game, contributing to their push for victory.
