Chelsea made history by becoming the first team to finish a 22-match season undefeated in the Women’s Super League, securing a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in their final match.
Having already claimed the championship for the sixth consecutive year, Chelsea completed the season with 60 points, outpacing second-place Arsenal by a notable 12 points with 19 wins and 3 draws.
Aggie Beever-Jones secured the win with a stoppage-time goal, after which Chelsea captain Millie Bright raised the trophy against a dazzling display of fireworks.
Several teams have previously navigated a full top-flight season without a loss in women’s soccer. However, since the league extended to 12 teams, resulting in a 22-game season format beginning in the 2019-20 season, Chelsea stands alone in this achievement.
Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor, during her inaugural season, expressed her elation, attributing it to the club’s substantial investment and dedication. “Every match presented its challenges, although some might find that hard to believe,” she remarked. “Today, we secured a last-minute goal to clinch the victory.”
In March, Chelsea clinched the Women’s League Cup, and they are set to compete in the Women’s FA Cup final against Manchester United on May 18, aiming for a domestic treble.
Their sole defeats across competitions this season came at the hands of Barcelona during both legs of the Women’s Champions League semifinals.
Next season, Chelsea, alongside Arsenal and third-place Manchester United, will represent England in the Women’s Champions League.
Arsenal edged out Manchester United 4-3 before a crowd of 46,603 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, securing second place ahead of the impending Champions League final clash with Barcelona in Lisbon on May 24.
