EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Jets delivered yet another disappointing moment for their fed-up fanbase ahead of their last game of the season against the Miami Dolphins.
The day kicked off on a tumultuous note when a group of fans unfurled a large banner displaying the team’s logo on the field of MetLife Stadium prior to the national anthem.
However, the banner was mistakenly displayed upside down, a reflection of the Jets’ lackluster performance throughout the season.
The banner was promptly rolled back up as the fans, realizing the blunder, carried it back inside while a few images circulated on social media, igniting a wave of sarcastic comments.
Despite entering the game with a disappointing 4-12 record and having already secured their 14th consecutive season without a playoff spot, the team had started the year with expectations of contending for a Super Bowl.
Shortly after the banner incident, the Jets managed to force the Dolphins into a three-and-out on their opening possession.
However, any momentum quickly shifted when Aaron Rodgers’ attempt at a slant pass to Davante Adams was deflected by Miami’s Javon Holland, landing in the hands of Tyrel Dodson for an interception.
This marked only the second time in Rodgers’ extensive career that he was intercepted on his very first pass of a game, a feat not seen since a wild-card playoff game in 2009, according to ESPN Research.
While the Jets’ defense managed to keep the Dolphins from scoring a touchdown, Miami’s Jason Sanders capitalized with a 26-yard field goal, giving them an early 3-0 lead.
