GLENDALE, Ariz. — Clayton Kershaw has the potential to earn up to $16 million through his one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, contingent on hitting specific performance markers. To receive the maximum payout, Kershaw must make 16 starts while also being on the active roster for a minimum of 90 days.
The agreement, which was made public on February 13, guarantees him $7.5 million. For each of the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th starts he makes, he is set to earn an additional $1 million. Furthermore, if he remains on the active roster for 30 days, he will receive $2.5 million, along with $1 million for reaching both 60 and 90 days.
Additionally, Kershaw will be accommodated with a hotel suite during road games. After undergoing foot and knee surgery in the offseason, he anticipates being placed on the 60-day injured list. He aims to be in a position to compete soon after his eligibility for activation arrives.
As a two-time Cy Young Award winner and a veteran of 17 seasons, the left-handed pitcher has established a remarkable record of 212 wins against 94 losses, along with an impressive ERA of 2.50 over 429 starts and three relief appearances. Heading toward his 37th birthday next month, Kershaw has also been selected as an All-Star ten times.
His recent medical history includes surgery on November 3, 2023, where he had repairs done to his shoulder capsule and glenohumeral ligaments. He made his return to the mound for the Dodgers on July 25, 2023, finishing the season with a record of 2-2 and a 4.50 ERA over seven starts, totaling 30 innings with 24 strikeouts, but he did not pitch after August 30.
Kershaw’s foot and knee surgeries took place on November 6, and last season, he earned $7.5 million, which included $2.5 million from performance bonuses linked to his starts.
