DANVILLE, Va. — A grave incident unfolded in Danville, Virginia, on Wednesday, resulting in the severe injury of a city councilman. Lee Vogler, a seasoned councilman serving for over ten years in the city, was subjected to a terrifying attack when a man burst into his office at a local publication. This individual proceeded to drench Vogler in gasoline before setting him ablaze. Authorities have determined that the attack stemmed from a personal conflict rather than Vogler’s political role.

Vogler, 38, was airlifted to a specialized burn center in North Carolina for treatment following the attack. The perpetrator, identified as 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, allegedly forced entry into Vogler’s workspace at Showcase Magazine. The confrontation escalated rapidly, leading to Vogler being chased outside and set on fire.

Hayes has been apprehended and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. Investigators have emphasized that the motive did not relate to Vogler’s position as a public official. Despite this, the incident has heightened concerns regarding the safety and security of elected officials, especially as distinctions between their public duties and private lives become increasingly blurred.

Andrew Scott Brooks, publisher of Showcase Magazine, expressed his dismay over the event, stating that violence is never justifiable. “This type of senseless violence needs to stop,” Brooks declared. At the time of the attack, two employees were present in the shared office space.

Witnesses recount Vogler’s desperate pleas for help as he was doused with gasoline and chased by Hayes, who subsequently set him on fire. Brooks recounted that the office door had been locked, but Hayes forcibly entered, leading to the devastating chain of events that unfolded.

Now in police custody without the option of bail, Hayes is being held at the Danville City Jail. Attempts to reach him or his representation for comment have been unsuccessful thus far.

Showcase Magazine, a publication focusing on Southwest Virginia and parts of North Carolina, occupies a small building alongside other businesses in Danville. Further commentary from Vogler’s family has not been forthcoming, as members have declined to provide statements regarding the troubling incident.

Politicians and public figures across Virginia have responded swiftly, unanimously condemning the attack. In a statement, Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin extended wishes for Vogler’s swift recovery and expressed hope for peace within the Danville community.

Publisher Brooks noted that Vogler had not expressed previous concerns about his safety prior to the attack. Describing Vogler as a salesperson at the magazine, Brooks highlighted his contributions beyond sales, indicating that Vogler was involved in writing stories about the community.

Brooks commended Vogler’s deep commitment to his role on the city council, which began in his early adulthood. Vogler’s dedication to serving the community is evident beyond his professional life; he is a committed father and actively involved in his children’s sports activities.

Located approximately 140 miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina, the Danville community now grapples with the aftermath of this frightening assault.
