Marquette elevates Mike Broeker to succeed Bill Scholl as athletic director upon his retirement

Marquette University has announced the appointment of Mike Broeker as the new athletic director, succeeding Bill Scholl, who is retiring. This decision was made public by university president Kimo Ah Yun on Tuesday, confirming that Broeker would step into the role effective immediately, also assuming the title of vice president.

Bill Scholl has served as the athletic director for a decade, announcing his retirement plans back in May, contingent on the university’s appointment of a new leader.

Broeker has dedicated 21 years to Marquette, spending the last 18 years in the role of deputy athletic director.

In a statement from the university, Broeker expressed his enthusiasm for taking on this new challenge, saying, “Marquette has played a pivotal role in shaping both my personal and professional journey over the past 21 years, and I am excited to continue working alongside our exceptional student-athletes, coaches, and staff. Together, we will ensure that our athletics program remains a strong reflection of our Jesuit values of excellence, faith, leadership, and service.”

An introductory press conference is scheduled to take place on Thursday, providing an opportunity for Broeker to elaborate on his vision for the athletic department.

Throughout his tenure at Marquette, Broeker has been instrumental in overseeing daily operations, with a particular emphasis on enhancing external operations and revenue streams. He has also collaborated closely with coaching and administrative staff members, managing programs such as men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, and men’s golf. According to university officials, his influence was key in bringing Marquette’s current head coaches on board.

Prior to his time at Marquette, Broeker was involved with communications sectors for both the NBA and the Women’s Tennis Association. He is an alumnus of Siena College, where he was a pitcher on the baseball team.

President Ah Yun praised Broeker’s understanding of the student-athlete experience, stating, “As a former student-athlete, Mike understands the demands our student-athletes face and creates an environment that supports every aspect of their Marquette experience. He has been involved in a number of campus initiatives and appreciates the role athletics plays within the university community.”
