LONDON – Loïs Boisson, who recently gained attention with her surprising performance reaching the French Open semifinals, has faced an early exit in the Wimbledon qualifying rounds.
The 22-year-old French tennis player was defeated in the first round by Canada’s Carson Branstine, ranked 197th, with scores of 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-4 on Tuesday. This match, taking place at the Roehampton venue, was one of Boisson’s rare appearances on grass courts.
Boisson’s impressive journey at Roland-Garros, where she made her Grand Slam main draw singles debut, saw her climb from a ranking of No. 361 to an impressive No. 65. Consequently, she entered the Wimbledon qualifying draw as the top seed.
Despite her notable success, tournament organizers in London did not grant Boisson a wild card entry into the Wimbledon main draw. This decision has sparked criticism back home in France.
At the French Open, Boisson managed to defeat high-ranking players like Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva before ultimately losing to Coco Gauff, who went on to win the tournament.
The main draw for Wimbledon is set to commence on Monday.
