DETROIT — The Detroit Lions launched a new marketing campaign aimed at the playoffs, featuring the motivational tagline “We want more.” This slogan was emblazoned on a bus traveling across Michigan, bringing excitement to fans from Detroit to the far reaches of the lower peninsula. Additionally, fans waved blue and white towels at Ford Field displaying the message.
Unfortunately for the Lions, their playoff aspirations were cut short as they suffered a disappointing 45-31 defeat to the sixth-seeded Washington Commanders in the divisional round. This outcome left many fans in a state of disbelief and sadness, particularly after the team had built high expectations following a strong regular season.
Head coach Dan Campbell expressed the pain of the loss, saying, “When you have goals and standards for yourself as a team and you don’t meet them, it hurts. Ultimately, we failed in that game.” The Commanders took control of the match early on, thanks in part to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who excelled against a depleted Lions defense, and rookie cornerback Mike Sainristil, who snagged two interceptions from Jared Goff.
Goff, who received Pro Bowl honors, reflected on the season’s ups and downs, noting, “We were on the top of the world after that Minnesota game.” The Lions concluded the regular season with a franchise-record 15 victories and their first back-to-back division titles. However, they fell short in the playoffs, failing to replicate last year’s strong performance that saw them reach the NFC championship game.
Linebacker Alex Anzalone acknowledged the crucial role momentum plays in games: “We just didn’t have the momentum, and it’s a game of momentum. When things aren’t going well and you face adversity, it can be tough to turn things around.” Despite this setback, there’s potential for future success as the Lions boast an impressive roster.
The team features four All-Pro players — including right tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown — alongside a strong supporting cast that includes many key players under contract for the next couple of seasons. Coach Campbell is optimistic about their playoff prospects, stating, “We have players in every pivotal position you can ask for to have success. Our Super Bowl window is open.”
In a recent development, Detroit’s offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has reportedly accepted the head coaching position with Chicago, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn may also leave. Campbell anticipates this change, saying, “I would expect to lose both, but I haven’t been told anything. I’ve got a feeling.” Additionally, the Lions face decisions regarding key free agents, including guard Kevin Zeitler and cornerback Carlton Davis.
The season was marred by injuries, culminating in Detroit’s loss in the playoffs when cornerback Amik Robertson suffered a broken arm on just the second snap. The Lions finished with 16 players on injured reserve, including rising star Aidan Hutchinson, who was sidelined with a serious leg injury.
Despite the disappointment, the team’s loss will serve as a motivator during the offseason. Coach Campbell highlighted that “failure only makes you stronger” when surrounded by the right guys. Looking ahead, the Lions will have a challenging schedule next season, playing against formidable teams such as Kansas City and Philadelphia, in addition to divisional rivals.
Replacing Johnson and possibly Glenn will be paramount for the Lions as they aim to maintain momentum for the upcoming season. Campbell acknowledged their contributions, stating, “They’re one of the major reasons why we’ve been able to get to where we’ve been. It’s a loss, but we move forward, and I’ll find the next best guys for us.”
