Cutter Gauthier tallies two goals, netting the OT winner as the Ducks defeat the Hurricanes 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. — Cutter Gauthier found the back of the net twice, with one of those goals coming just 1:52 into overtime, leading the Anaheim Ducks to a narrow 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

Alongside Gauthier, Jansen Harkins also contributed a goal, and Lukas Dostal had a standout performance in goal by making 35 saves, which played a crucial role in helping the Ducks end their three-game losing streak. Jackson LaCombe chipped in with two assists for the Ducks.

On the other side, Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov scored a power-play goal in the third period, followed by Seth Jarvis netting the equalizer with just 56 seconds left in regulation, as Carolina pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. Pyotr Kochetkov was notable in net for the Hurricanes, turning away 17 shots.

Before the match commenced, Carolina honored their former captain Eric Staal by retiring his jersey. Staal, a six-time NHL All-Star and an iconic figure within the franchise, became the fourth player to receive this recognition.

From this game, a few takeaways stand out. For the Ducks, Gauthier, who was picked fifth overall in the 2022 draft, demonstrated his growing talent by scoring his sixth and seventh goals of the season. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes were dominant in puck possession and outshot Anaheim 37-20, yet they struggled to convert those chances into goals.

A pivotal point in the game came when Dostal made a crucial save against Eric Robinson on a breakaway with 7:05 left in the second period. Despite several prime scoring opportunities, the Hurricanes could not get past Dostal, who had previously allowed nine goals in the last two games.

Looking at the key statistics, Carolina’s overtime record now stands at 3-3 for the season, marking their first loss since a shootout defeat against Columbus on December 31.

Looking ahead, the Ducks will continue their six-game road trip with a match against Washington on Tuesday, while the Hurricanes prepare for a visit to Buffalo on Wednesday.
