CINCINNATI — Arizona Diamondbacks’ All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes is set to undergo Tommy John surgery on his elbow, halting his season just months after finalizing a record-breaking six-year $210 million contract with the team.

Manager Torey Lovullo shared the news on Friday, noting that the decision was reached after consultation with many advisors. Lovullo mentioned that the operation is likely to be performed next week by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ team physician.

This announcement surfaced only three days following Burnes being placed on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his right elbow.

During his latest outing, Burnes had to depart the game as his team was ahead by a score of 3-0 in the fifth inning against Washington. After conceding a single to CJ Abrams with two outs, Burnes signaled towards the dugout, visibly upset.

In that game, Burnes completed 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits, leading the team to a 3-1 victory. Across 11 starts this season, he has achieved a 3-2 record with a commendable 2.66 ERA.
Following the game, Burnes disclosed experiencing tightness around his elbow during the initial outs of the fifth inning.

“We’re fully behind Corbin at this moment,” Lovullo explained. “Receiving this news is quite challenging for us, but we’ll rally together and put in our best for him throughout the year. The road to recovery is long, but I am confident he will come back stronger for the Diamondbacks.”

Burnes joined the Diamondbacks after securing his fourth straight All-Star appearance with Baltimore last year. He began his career with Milwaukee, playing six seasons before being traded to the Orioles at the beginning of 2024.

Burnes holds an option to exit his contract after the 2026 season, though it’s now doubtful given that his likely return won’t be until post-All-Star break next season. Exercising the opt-out would mean forfeiting $140 million in guaranteed earnings.
