N’DJAMENA, Chad — On Wednesday evening, residents in the capital city of Chad, N’Djamena, reported hearing multiple gunshots near the presidential palace. According to local authorities, soldiers are currently protecting the president, assuring the public that the situation is under control.
Witnesses indicated that the sound of gunfire persisted for several minutes in close proximity to the presidential compound. Concerns arose about the security landscape in Chad, particularly considering the region’s history of coups and political instability.
It remains unclear where the gunshots originated. Footage captured from the vicinity portrayed military vehicles and well-armed soldiers patrolling the streets and occupying positions within the presidential palace itself.
Foreign Affairs Minister Abderaman Koulamallah attempted to reassure citizens during a live broadcast on Facebook, where he was seen flanked by soldiers in what appeared to be a tranquil setting within the presidential palace. He stated, “The situation is completely under control, there is no fear.” He further emphasized their commitment, saying, “We are here to defend our president.”
This incident comes just a week after Chad conducted parliamentary elections intended to pave the way for a return to democracy. However, the main opposition parties opted to boycott the elections, leaving questions about the legitimacy of the process. The announcement of the election results is still pending, but analysts predict that the outcomes may enable President Mahamat Deby Itno to reinforce his authority further.
Deby Itno ascended to power as a military leader following the death of his father, who ruled for thirty years, during a battle against rebels in 2021. He subsequently won a presidential election the previous year, which international observers deemed lacking credibility.
