CHICAGO — In an intriguing twist of tactics, Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions implemented a clever ruse that mirrored a maneuver previously executed by Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers to outsmart the Chicago Bears this past Sunday.

The highlight of this deception unfolded during the third quarter of the Lions’ 34-17 triumph, when a fake fumble misled the Bears’ defense, ultimately leading to Goff completing a touchdown pass.

As the play developed, Goff appeared to stumble on his drop back, while his teammates loudly shouted “Fumble!” and Jahmyr Gibbs feigned a dive for the seemingly loose ball. This clever performance set up Goff to connect with Sam LaPorta for a 21-yard touchdown reception, giving the Lions a convincing 34-14 lead.

On Monday, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson approached Goff with an innovative adaptation of that play. Initially, the suggestion involved a deliberate fumble, reminiscent of the old trick play known as the “fumblerooski.” However, Goff felt uncertain about executing such a move, prompting a refinement of the concept. After thorough practice, the team successfully implemented the adjusted strategy during the game against their rivals.

“I was a bit hesitant about the original idea when Ben asked if I could fumble on purpose and then recover it,” Goff shared. “We quickly pivoted from that and decided to act as if I was falling or fumbling while securely holding the ball. I believe the diving motion from Gibbs truly enhances the deception and sells the play; my role was only part of it.”

Gibbs and Tim Patrick later revealed that Johnson had drawn inspiration for this innovative play from the Packers’ season opener against the Bears at Soldier Field last year. In that game, Love connected with Luke Musgrave on a 37-yard gain following a fumbled snap.

With such creative plays in their arsenal, the Lions demonstrated their strategic prowess and adaptability, contributing to their successful outing and solidifying their place in the standings.
