SEATTLE — Dominic Canzone’s timely two-run single in the seventh inning lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 7-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night, bringing their record back to an even .500. Canzone, who rejoined the team from Triple-A Tacoma on June 9, delivered his hit against left-hander Tim Herrin (4-2), threading the ball past the infield to drive in two runs during what turned out to be a pivotal four-run inning for the Mariners.

Earlier, Randy Arozarena broke a 2-2 deadlock with an RBI single, while rookie Cole Young added another by hitting a double to left field two batters after Canzone’s deliverance. The Mariners’ lineup breathed life into the team, supporting their starter Luis Castillo, who had allowed two runs and three hits over six innings. The Guardians’ runs came on back-to-back solo home runs by Nolan Jones and Steven Kwan during the third inning.

Rowdy Tellez kept Seattle in the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning, marking the Mariners’ initial score. Jorge Polanco later extended the lead by adding a homer in the eighth, sealing the win.

The victory was secured when Carlos Vargas (2-5) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, and Matt Brash followed, conceding just a single hit in the eighth. Eduard Bazardo wrapped up the game as the Mariners notched their fifth win out of 18 recent games.

A significant play unfolded in the fifth inning when Rowdy Tellez’s earlier homer turned into a fierce liner that struck Guardians reliever Cade Smith on the forehead. Despite the impact, Smith remained in the game and completed the inning without further runs scored.

Jose Ramirez from Cleveland walked in the sixth inning, expanding his league-leading on-base streak to 38 games, the season’s longest in the American League and second in MLB behind Philadelphia Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber, who reached base safely in 47 consecutive games.

Looking ahead, Mariners RHP George Kirby (1-3, 6.53 ERA) is set to take the mound on Saturday against the Guardians’ RHP Tanner Bibee (4-6, 3.81 ERA).
