PORTLAND, Ore. — In a thrilling conclusion to the match, Preston Judd clinched a crucial equalizing goal for the San Jose Earthquakes as they managed a 1-1 tie against the Portland Timbers on Friday night. Despite their disadvantage of playing a man short due to a sending-off in the 52nd minute, the Earthquakes salvaged a point from the game.
Judd, who entered the field as a substitute for Beau Leroux in the 75th minute, capitalized on a rebound after Portland’s goalkeeper Daniel De Sousa Britto failed to secure Ousseni Bouda’s initial shot. This mark was Judd’s second goal of the season and the sixth in his career, showcasing his opportunistic play in crucial moments.
San Jose, with a record of 6-7-5, demonstrated resilience after midfielder Ian Harkes received a red card, necessitating tactical adjustments. Meanwhile, the Timbers, holding an 8-4-6 record, initially took the lead courtesy of defender Juan Mosquera, who skillfully netted his first goal of the season and the fourth of his career in his 80th appearance for the Timbers. Felipe Mora provided the assist, marking his third of the season.
James Pantemis, the Timbers’ goalkeeper, provided a solid defensive front with six saves, while his counterpart Britto from the Earthquakes made four saves to fend off the Timbers’ attacks. Historically, the Timbers have maintained an unbeaten run against San Jose at home, with a record of 14-0-5.
Having previously defeated the Timbers 1-0 in May, the Earthquakes will look forward to facing FC Dallas on June 25. The Timbers are scheduled to resume their league fixtures on June 28 with an away game against Toronto FC.
