A twin-engine propeller aircraft encountered an unfortunate accident as it crashed onto a highway in Texas, resulting in the aircraft splitting into two pieces on Wednesday afternoon. The incident caused damage to several vehicles and necessitated medical attention for four individuals, as reported by local authorities.
The Piper PA-31, which had the pilot as its sole occupant, went down around 3 p.m. near an overpass in the city of Victoria, situated approximately 150 miles southwest of Houston, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. A video released by police on social media indicated that three vehicles were affected by the crash, with images depicting the plane severed at its fuselage, and part of it resting on top of one vehicle.
Victoria Police Deputy Chief Eline Moya provided an update stating that three individuals sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, while one person was transported to a hospital outside the area for more extensive treatment. The pilot was also undergoing an evaluation for his injuries.
“This isn’t something we witness regularly, but it’s reassuring to know that those involved are doing well and receiving medical attention,” Moya mentioned.
The identity of the pilot has not yet been disclosed, and the FAA is expected to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Witness Tony Poynor recounted his experience as he neared an intersection when he began to hear the sound of an aircraft engine hovering closely nearby. “To my left, I could see a shadow of the plane on the wall,” he described. “Then it flew directly over my truck, maintaining a horizontal position. About a quarter of a mile ahead, it started to tilt erratically.”
After the crash, Poynor approached the wreckage and found the pilot conscious; however, he was unable to extract him from the aircraft.
