LONDON — Olympic and world champion cyclist Katy Marchant was hospitalized following a collision during the Track Champions League on Saturday.
During the opening round of the keirin, Marchant, representing Britain, collided with Germany’s Alessa-Catriona Propster, propelling both athletes into the crowd at the high part of the track. This incident resulted in injuries not only to the riders but also to several spectators present at the event.
The International Cycling Union released a statement confirming that two riders and four spectators received medical attention after the mishap during the women’s keirin race. The organization’s medical team promptly responded, and one of the cyclists was subsequently taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Due to the seriousness of the incident, officials decided to suspend the competition temporarily.
Katy Marchant recently achieved remarkable success, having secured gold in the team sprint event alongside teammates Sophie Capewell and Emma Finucane at the Paris Olympics. The same trio also claimed the gold medal in the same discipline at the world championships held in Denmark in October.
