LONDON — Emma Hayes witnessed an impressive performance from her U.S. women’s national team, but they were unable to secure a win in her return to England on Saturday at Wembley Stadium.

Hayes, a native of London and former Chelsea coach with a remarkable track record including securing the Olympic gold medal earlier this summer, led the U.S. in a friendly against the reigning European champions, England.

Despite being ranked as the top two women’s teams in the FIFA standings, the match concluded without any goals, resulting in a 0-0 draw.

The U.S. squad was missing key players; the injured attacking trio of Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson was sidelined. Nevertheless, the team showcased significant talent, particularly when Alyssa Thompson’s curling effort forced a save from England’s goalkeeper, Mary Earps, early in the match.

England, too, faced its own selection challenges, losing forward Lauren Hemp and defender Maya Le Tissier to injury.

Throughout the first half, the host team struggled to exit their half, facing a solid U.S. defense and frequently giving up possession in midfield. The Americans controlled the ball effectively, gaining ample space to implement their strategy and apply pressure.

However, they encountered difficulties finishing their chances in the final third, unable to find the back of the net despite their dominance. A shot from Sam Coffey near the edge of the box just before halftime was easily gathered by Earps. In the second half, U.S. captain Lindsey Horan had a goal ruled out for offside and then fired an angled shot wide.

Additionally, the U.S. was awarded a penalty, but it was overturned after VAR determined that Alex Greenwood had touched the ball with her chest rather than her arm.
