DOGE, Social Security access
Unions are fighting back against DOGE. They filed an emergency court request to stop Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from gaining access to private Social Security data. Millions of Americans could be affected if it gets its way.
The lawsuit, filed in a Maryland federal court, names the Social Security Administration (SSA) and its acting commissioner, Leland Dudek. The unions argue DOGE has no valid reason to access these records. They claim the agency refuses to explain its motives. They say it is expanding its power without oversight.
Tiffany Flick, a former senior SSA official, warns that DOGE’s overreach threatens privacy. She says career SSA employees are working to protect sensitive records. She claims DOGE is ignoring necessary security safeguards.
Lawyer Karianne Jones, who represents the unions, says DOGE is hiding its true intentions. She says they refuse to say exactly what data they want. She argues their demands are too broad. DOGE wants everything—source codes, internal systems, and raw Social Security data. She calls it a reckless and dangerous power grab.
It has been in legal battles since its creation. Over two dozen lawsuits have been filed against its cost-cutting efforts. Judges have questioned its secretive methods. However, some courts have refused to block DOGE’s work.
A federal judge in Washington recently rejected a request to stop it from accessing Treasury Department systems. The judge admitted privacy concerns exist but ruled there was no immediate harm. Meanwhile, a New York court issued a ruling limiting DOGE’s authority.
The Trump administration wants to shrink the federal workforce. DOGE is leading the charge. Layoffs could impact more than 10% of SSA’s workforce. Offices could close across the country. Seniors and disabled Americans may struggle to access services.
DOGE already gained access to Treasury and IRS databases. The administration says it is searching for fraud and waste. Critics argue it is an excuse to cut benefits and services. The public remains in the dark about their real agenda.
The fight against it is far from over. The unions stand firm in their opposition. DOGE continues pushing for more government access. The courts will ultimately decide how much power it can have.
