Authorities in Washington, D.C., are currently examining allegations of assault against Cory Mills, a Republican U.S. Representative from Florida. An official indicated that the investigation has been revisited for further scrutiny and might not result in formal charges.
On Wednesday afternoon, officers responded to an assault report in the Wharf neighborhood, as per a statement from the Metro Police Department. The incident involved a female victim, and no weapons were reported to have been involved. Although the situation remains under active investigation, no arrests have been made so far.
Mills’ office released a statement acknowledging the involvement of law enforcement in a personal issue at the congressman’s residence. The statement affirmed Mills’ strong denial of any misconduct, expressing confidence that the investigation would resolve rapidly in his favor.
A law enforcement source conveyed that the case was redirected for further examination by the police and could potentially not lead to charges. This source requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to share public details regarding the inquiry.
The handling of the initial complaint has led to an internal examination within the Metro Police Department (MPD). Upon awareness of this matter, MPD leadership promptly initiated a review to confirm compliance with procedural protocols. The Internal Affairs Bureau is now conducting an investigation in this regard.
Mayor Muriel Bowser addressed reporters without confirming Mills’ connection to the case. However, she mentioned an ongoing internal review aimed at ensuring that all officers adhered to MPD policies.
Cory Mills, who is an Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient for his service in Iraq, was re-elected for a second congressional term last year.
