Anchorage Animal Shelter Care and Control broken into Monday night. Two men entered through the night drop-off doors. They stole a cat and damaged four kennels.

Security Footage Shows How It Happened

Surveillance video captured the entire break-in. Two men approached the shelter’s overnight doors. Their faces covered. One wore a bulky jacket. They checked the doors to see which one is unlocked.

How They Got Inside

One man slipped into the bottom kennel. The second held the door open with a food bowl. He then climbed inside. They took only 10 seconds to get in.

They Handled the Cat Roughly

The men didn’t stay inside long. They grabbed a cat. Then, they ran off into the woods near Elmore Street.

Staff Discovered the Damage in the Morning

Shelter workers checked the night drop area the next morning. They found four broken kennels. One cat was missing. The cages were unusable and needed repairs.

The Kennels Need Repairs

Assistant Shelter Manager Logan Robinson said repairs will take time. Until then, night drop services are limited. That means people who need to drop off animals overnight may not be able to do so.

This Has Happened Before

This is the second time the shelter was robbed. Staff members are frustrated. They work hard to care for animals, and now they have to deal with extra repairs.
