CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Lindsey Vonn’s comeback to the world of ski racing at the age of 40, equipped with a newly fitted titanium knee, has brought an unexpected advantage for her. Competing in Europe allows her a temporary escape from the political climate back in the United States.

“There’s a lot happening in the U.S., and much of it is not very uplifting,” Vonn commented on Sunday when asked about the prospect of watching Donald Trump’s second inauguration as president. “So, I’m thrilled to have this chance to disconnect.”

Vonn expressed her appreciation for the focus that ski racing requires, stating, “When I am at the starting gate, my mind is solely on the race. I’m not preoccupied with worldly issues or my personal life. It’s all about speed, and that clarity is what I value.”

In a previous interview with CNN in 2017, Vonn made it clear that she would not be representing Trump during the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, where she ultimately secured a bronze medal in downhill skiing. “My goal is to represent the people of the United States, rather than the president,” she expressed, sharing her perspective on what it means to wear the U.S. ski team uniform.

Having made her return to racing last month after a hiatus of nearly six years, Vonn experienced a fall during a World Cup super-G event, fortunately escaping without injury. This race took place on the course that is set for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics next year.

Looking ahead, Vonn revealed her intentions to retire again after making one final appearance at the Olympics in 2026.

When asked about her thoughts on the potential ban of TikTok in the U.S. and the loss of connection with her followers on that platform, she responded with humor, saying, “I’m too old for TikTok.”
