ST. PAUL, Minn. — Connor McDavid continues to impress with his record-setting performances, as he helped the Edmonton Oilers secure a 5-3 victory against the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday evening.
In this game, McDavid scored two goals and contributed an assist, enabling him to surpass Jari Kurri for second place in points scored in the history of the Oilers. Throughout his impressive 10-year career, McDavid has amassed a total of 1,044 points, placing him just behind Wayne Gretzky on the franchise leaderboard. McDavid has been recognized as the league’s Most Valuable Player three times and has claimed the scoring title five times.
Kurri, who played a significant role in the Oilers’ success alongside Gretzky, tallied 1,043 points during his decade with the team. For reference, Gretzky remains the NHL’s all-time leading scorer, finishing his Edmonton career with 1,669 points over nine seasons.
“It’s quite a remarkable achievement,” expressed Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch. “For McDavid to ascend the scoring ranks at such a rapid pace, especially within an organization that has had numerous legendary players, is impressive. I’ve witnessed so many incredible moments from him. He is not only a fantastic player but also a great teammate. After all we’ve seen, I wouldn’t be surprised at anything he does, but this is a significant milestone for him, and his teammates are very proud of his success.”
One of McDavid’s goals stood out as particularly impressive; he managed to score from a challenging angle, lifting the puck past Minnesota goalie Filip Gustavsson with very little space to work with.
Following the game, McDavid chose not to address journalists. Earlier in the match, he was involved in a collision during the second period with Wild forward Marcus Johansson, where McDavid’s elbow inadvertently struck Johansson in the face. While no penalty was called for the incident, it sparked considerable frustration among the Minnesota players.
